Building Communities
Melanie Leech, Chief Executive of the British Property Federation (BPF), isn’t your typical property sector leader. Her journey to the top of one of the UK’s most influential industry bodies is as unique as it is inspiring. In this exclusive interview with GSC Executives, Melanie shares her experiences, insights, and vision for the future of the property sector.
A career built on public service
Melanie’s career didn’t start in the glossy world of real estate. Instead, she began her professional life as a police officer in the Metropolitan Police, patrolling the streets of Paddington Green in London. This early experience laid the foundation for her approach to leadership and problem-solving.
“As a female police officer, you know, you’re not going to be able to do what a sort of a six foot two male officer can do in certain situations, which is sort of exert or physical authority, you have to find another way of doing it,” Melanie explains. This need to find alternative solutions has served her well throughout her career.
From Law Enforcement to Policy Making
After four years on the force, Melanie made the leap to the civil service. Her roles included:
- Working in customs and excise
- Heading arts policy
- Leading broadcasting policy
- Overseeing rail regulation
This diverse experience in the public sector honed her skills in policy-making and stakeholder management, crucial for her future role at the BPF.
Tackling Imposter Syndrome Head-On
Despite her impressive CV, Melanie admits to battling imposter syndrome throughout her career. She recalls her first day as private secretary to Sir Robin Butler, then Cabinet Secretary:
“I do remember, even now, and this is a long time ago now, that first day, walking in to be Sir Robin Butler’s private secretary, running his office, right at the heart of government, thinking, what have I done? I can’t possibly do this.”
Melanie’s candid admission is a reminder that even the most accomplished leaders grapple with self-doubt. Her advice? “You have to find your allies, you have to find your own path through it and be true to yourself.”
Transforming the Property Sector
As CEO of the British Property Federation, Melanie is at the forefront of driving change in the industry. She’s particularly proud of two key initiatives:
Merger with UK PropTech Association: A move to bridge the gap between property and technology.
BPF Futures: A network for junior professionals in the industry, now 2,500 strong.
The Future of Property: People-Centric and Sustainable
Melanie envisions a property sector that’s increasingly focused on people and sustainability. “We’re becoming much more focused on people, as our customers were becoming much more focused on real estate as a service,” she notes.
This shift brings new challenges and opportunities:
- Integrating sustainability into all aspects of property management
- The need for more diverse skill sets
- A focus on managing assets efficiently
Leadership Lessons from an Industry Trailblazer
Melanie’s leadership philosophy is rooted in authenticity and self-awareness. She emphasises that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership:
“What I’ve learned is there’s no blueprint, there’s no one model of what a good leader looks like.”
Instead, she advocates for understanding your own strengths and weaknesses, and building a team that complements your skills.
The Road Ahead
As Melanie looks to the future, she’s excited about the potential for technology and sustainability to transform the property sector. She’s also keen to dive deeper into these areas herself:
“I’d love to sort of delve a bit more into the sustainability issues that we’re working with. I’d love to delve a bit more into the tech agenda, actually, and find out more about that.”
